What will the Significant Landscape Assessment do?

The Southern Grampians Significant Landscape Assessment will:

Define and describe (with photos and maps) the visual landscape character of the Grampians region.

Determine which areas of the Grampians, and which views and vistas, are the most significant and why.

Seek and include the community’s values on the character and significance of the Grampians landscape.

Assess and evaluate various forms of development that have occurred in the landscape; some of which will be positive, and others which may have detracted from the significance of the area.

Consider using policies and guidance in the planning scheme (such as the Significant Landscape Overlay) to protect and manage the Grampians landscape into the future.

The above tasks will be approached with an understanding that the landscape is an important economic driver for tourism and agriculture, and that its protection and management should contribute to a vibrant local economy.

  1. Congratulations for including the low level 'view' of the grampians by highlighting the native wallaby grass of the area. The native grasses are of course a major and distictive aspect of the region, being part of the nationally protected temperate grasslands of the VVP. Open native grasslands, wetlands and woody grasslands are among the other precious and diminishing vistas requiring thoughtful, active protection for the future of the area. Speak to Field Naturalists, Trust for Nature or the CMA for further images of these vista images. More photos of the grasslands and the wide varity of the wildflowers associated with the grasslands can accessed at the Gallery at www. vvpcmn.org
